Turkey in Contact with Eastern Libyan Authorities

December 31, 2020

On Wednesday, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu disclosed that Ankara was in contact with the authorities of eastern Libya.

In a press conference held today for the performance assessment of his ministry in 2020, Cavusoglu said that Turkey is communicating with Libya’s eastern authorities, noting that the special representative of the Libyan Parliament Speaker, Ageela Saleh, had previously visited Turkey. He claimed that Saleh intended to send his deputy, but this visit is yet to take place.

Notably, Turkey is the main supporter of the Government of National Accord (GNA), led by Prime Minister Fayez Al-Sarraj, against the Libyan National Army (LNA) led by Field Marshall Khalifa Haftar. Ankara continues to escalate its involvement in the Libyan conflict, despite Turkey participating and agreeing to the results of the Berlin Conference held last January where foreign states active in Libya agreed to uphold the UN arms embargo.
