On Tuesday, the Deputy Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Ahmed Maiteeq, held a meeting with the Special Representative of the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in Libya, Abdel Qader Musa.

In a statement, the GNA said that the meeting focused on the organisation’s activities in Libya, especially in the field of education and its future vision for developing education services in cooperation with specialized experts in the Ministry of Education and working to overcome the difficulties facing the sector.

The statement added: “During the meeting, it was emphasized how to deal with the first batch of the Covid-19 vaccine, through awareness campaigns that will be held in particular to benefit from it on the largest scale.”

Libya has recorded 102,456 confirmed cases of Covid-19 and 1,536 deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic in March.

In November 2020, the Head of the Advisory Committee to Confront the Coronavirus Pandemic of the GNA, Khalifa Al-Bakoush, said that Libya will receive the first batch of vaccines in the first quarter of 2021. “1.4 million Libyans will take the first dose of the vaccine according to WHO estimates”, Al-Bakoush noted.

Libya has signed an agreement with Kovacs Complex to obtain two million doses of a new Covid-19 vaccine. He explained that the vaccine will be tested in several countries such as the UK, US, and Germany before being supplied to Libya.
