On Monday, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) provided humanitarian aid to over 170 migrants being held in the Al-Kufra Immigration and Deportation Center.

In a tweet, the IOM said that it had distributed blankets, mattresses, winter clothing and cleaning kits to those awaiting repatriation from the North African country.

Head of the Directorate for Combatting Irregular Migration (DCIM) in Al-Kufra, Muhammad Al-Fadil expressed his thanks and appreciation for the humanitarian support provided to the illegal migrants in the country.

Libya has become the preferred point of departure for thousands of migrants wishing to cross the Mediterranean to reach Europe. Thousands remain detained in overcrowded detention centers, despite repeated international calls to close down these centers.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) reiterated that Libya is not a safe port to return migrants.
