On Tuesday, the Speaker of Parliament, Ageela Saleh held talks with the Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Jan Kubis to discuss the available options for holding the upcoming general elections.

In a statement, the Parliament’s media office said that Saleh stressed the necessity of holding the elections as scheduled, indicating that once the members of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) agree on a constitutional basis for holding the elections, it would be referred to the Libyan Parliament for approval.

He added that in the event that the LPDF members failed to agree on a constitutional base, the Parliamentary decision No. 05 of 2014 will be implemented, which provides for Presidential elections to be voted directly by the Libyan people.

Kubis renewed the UN and the international community’s readiness to continue to provide support to the Libyan authorities, in light of the decisive stage being witnessed by the country.

The UN envoy also highlighted the necessity to advance the implementation of the Libyan ceasefire agreement, in full compliance with the UN resolutions. This would begin with the immediate reopening of the coastal road and the withdrawal of all foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya without further delay.
