The Secretary-General of the Arab League, Ahmed Aboul Gheit stated that he valued the convening of the Libya Stability Conference for the first time in the country. He added that the Libyan people are looking for stability after more than a decade of crises.
In exclusive statements reported by Sky News, Aboul Gheit added that for the first time on Libyan soil, with the presence of 31 countries, the United Nations, the African Union, the European Union, and the Arab League, a conference was able to be held. He pointed out that this is an indication of support for stability in the country.
The Secretary-General stated that “we listened to what was presented by the Libyan authorities and their various axes, the security, the armed forces and the 5 + 5 Joint Military Commission (JMC) and how they think about why things went to the way they went over the course of 10 years, and how to restore the situation and bring stability to the state.”
He explained the importance of the conference, which was held in Tripoli, on Thursday, lies in the fact that it was held on Libyan soil. “It is no longer required to hold meetings related to Libya in Italy, France, Germany, or different locations,” he said.
On Thursday, Aboul Gheit affirmed the League’s support for the efforts of the Libyan Presidential Council in implementing the political roadmap, which paves the way for achieving a comprehensive national reconciliation programme, and the holding of the upcoming elections.
He renewed the League’s commitment to continuing its supportive role to ensure a comprehensive settlement of the situation in Libya.
