On Monday, Head of Libya’s High National Electoral Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Din Al-Sayeh held an extensive meeting with UN and EU representatives to discuss the technical and advisory support for the commission.
The meeting was attended by the UN Deputy Special Envoy for Libya, the Resident Representative of the United Nations Development Program, the EU Ambassador, and the Ambassadors of France, Italy, and the Netherlands. The Head of the Political Bureau of the British Embassy also attended the meeting.
HNEC stated that the meeting comes within the framework of the technical and advisory support provided by the international community, to implement the electoral process in Libya.
They also discussed the latest arrangements in accordance with the new political developments, and the readiness of HNEC to hold the upcoming elections as scheduled.
Al-Sayeh praised the efforts of the international community, donor states, and supportive countries to support the commission. He claimed that the commission “aims to end the transitional phase, through a transparent electoral process that satisfies all parties, and whose results fulfil the aspirations of the Libyan people.”
In September, the United Nations Development Program (UNDP) Administrator, Achim Steiner recently appointed Marc-André Franche as Resident Representative ad interim for Libya.
Khalida Bouzar, UNDP’s Regional Director for Arab States, underlined that “the appointment of Franche and the new management team of UNDP Libya underscores the priority given to Libya by UNDP and our commitment to redouble efforts to accompany the country’s peaceful transition.”
“UNDP Libya reaffirms its commitment to accompany the electoral process, and continue strengthening democratic institutions. This will help the country move forward towards the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development in a peaceful and unified way,” Franche stated.
