Stephanie Williams, the UN Secretary General’s Special Adviser to Libya (SASG) held a meeting with the Libyan Political Parties Consortium, to review the bottlenecks that affected the electoral process in Libya.
“I met a number of representatives of the Political Parties Consortium who demanded that the will of the 2.8 million Libyans who registered to vote must not be usurped. I reiterated that the UN will stand by the Libyan people in their demand for an electoral process to end the long transitional period. I also stressed the need for determined efforts to push forward on national reconciliation and transitional justice,” she tweeted.
Williams also met with the Roadmap Committee in Tripoli. In a thread after the meeting, She said: “We had a positive initial meeting with the HoR Roadmap Committee at the Parliament office in Tripoli. I commended the committee on its diverse membership and its spirit of unity and evident desire to build upon this renewed goodwill. The committee outlined its plan to meet within a short period of time a number of different constituencies and parties throughout Libya, to discuss the constitutional track. I stressed the importance of a pragmatic and time-bound approach keeping in mind the need to preserve the momentum for elections, and honor the commitment to the 2.8 million registered voters in Libya.”
“I also offered the United Nations support in any efforts that help bring Libyans together to end the long transitional period,” she added.
On Wednesday, she held another meeting with the Head of Libya’s High National Elections Commission (HNEC), Emad Al-Sayeh. Williams stressed that holding the elections is the only path to achieve peace in the country.
“I met today with HNEC Chairman, Dr. Emad Al-Sayeh, and board member, Mr. Abdul Hakim Al-Shaab. We discussed ways to consolidate and strengthen efforts to keep the electoral process moving forward. I reiterated the full support of the United Nations and the international community to HNEC, as an independent institution in charge of the electoral process,” Williams said in a tweet.
