On Saturday, the United Nations (UN) Secretary-General Special Adviser to Libya, Stephanie Williams, met with Libyan participants in the Peacemakers’ gathering in Tunis.
In a tweet, Williams said, “this morning in Tripoli, I received a group from the EUI Peacemakers. I appreciated their briefing on the outcome of the recent Peacemakers’ gathering in Tunis where options were presented to address the ongoing political crisis in Libya and to restore the electoral process on a firm, fully inclusive, transparent and consensual basis.”
She added, that “we also discussed the need to redouble efforts to foster national reconciliation. Calm on the ground must be preserved.”
Williams stressed that all actors should refrain from the use of violence, threats of violence and should end the use of hate speech and incitement.
Last week, the UN Special Adviser to Libya met with the Tunisian Foreign Minister, Othman Jerandi, in Tunis. They discussed the latest political developments in Libya and stressed the importance of supporting Libya’s security and stability.
Both sides also reviewed efforts made by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to resume the political track, in coordination and consultation with various Libyan authorities.
Jerandi reiterated his support for Libya, as well as the Tunisian Presidency’s support for Libyan-led dialogue, “which puts Libya’s interest above all considerations.”
The Tunisian Foreign Minister also affirmed the important role of neighbouring countries, the African Union (AU), and the UN, in order to secure a lasting solution in Libya.
In turn, Williams praised Tunisia’s role in reaching compromises between the various Libyan parties. She also appreciated the efforts of the Tunisian Presidency, its support for UNSMIL, and its support for stability efforts in Libya.
