Libyan Embassy in Contact With Stranded Nationals in Sudan

The Libyan Embassy in Sudan said that it had succeeded in contacting two nationals who were stranded in Khartoum, and could not be evacuated.

In a statement, the Libyan Ambassador to Sudan, Fawzi Boumrez said that they had “succeeded in contacting Hassan Buhya from the city of Ajdabiya and Saad Ahmed Al-Ferjani from Benghazi. They were unable to join the two evacuation convoys which took place over the past two days. They both noted that they were in good health.”

The Embassy indicated that this comes as part of the framework of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs’ concern for the safety of Libyan citizens across Sudan. The Embassy has suspended its work and closed its headquarters in Khartoum, as a result of the clashes taking place in Sudan.

On Tuesday, Libya’s Ministry of Transport announced that a total of 104 Libyan nationals, who were evacuated from Sudan via Saudi Arabia a few days ago, are set to arrive in Tripoli.

In a statement, the ministry added that nationals will arrive on an Afriqiyah Airways flight, from Jeddah.

This comes a day after the Libyan Foreign Ministry confirmed that the nationals were evacuated from conflict-ridden Sudan, in coordination with the Saudi authorities.

Yesterday, the Libyan Prime Minister-designate, Fathi Bashagha thanked Saudi Arabia for its efforts to evacuate members of the Libyan community stranded in Sudan, and to facilitate their return to Libya.

In a tweet, Bashagha confirmed the depth of brotherly relations between the two countries.

On his part, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Unity (GNU) Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba said: “We are following the process of evacuating Libyan nationals from Sudan. We appreciate the role of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia in facilitating the procedures.”

The Libyan Embassy in Sudan said that 105 nationals have been evacuated to Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.

The Embassy stated that the Libyans who were evacuated were employees of the diplomatic mission and their families, students, and employees of Libyan institutions operating in Sudan. They were evacuated by sea through Port Sudan to Jeddah.
