On Thursday, Amnesty International urgently called for action in response to the ongoing disappearance of Farouq Ben Said, a prosecutor in Libya’s military prosecutor’s office. The organization expressed its deep concern that Ben Said might have been targeted, due to politically motivated reasons.
It highlighted that Ben Said has been missing, since 26 June. The organization had previously indicated that Ben Said had been detained by Libya’s Anti-Terrorism and Organized Crime Deterrence Force, thus amplifying concerns about his sudden disappearance.
The organization affirmed that Ben Said’s family has submitted complaints to the police, and the Attorney General’s Office. However, they have received no information about his condition or whereabouts.
In a call to local authorities, Amnesty International has urged them to reveal the fate, and immediate location of Said. They insist on transparency, and demanded accountability for Said’s abrupt and unexplained disappearance.
As international concern grows, this case further highlights the urgent need for proper enforcement of human rights in Libya. The question of Ben Said’s whereabouts remains a pressing issue that the international community, continues to monitor closely.
In this complex scenario, the judiciary system has often been a target, with attorneys, prosecutors, and judges frequently facing threats, abductions, and sometimes assassinations. Such attacks undermine the rule of law, and impede attempts to hold those responsible for human rights abuses accountable.
