US Stresses Commitment to Safe & Sovereign Libya

The US Embassy in Libya has reiterated its “unwavering support for a secure and independent Libya, firmly backing the establishment of a unified Libyan army.”

In a recent tweet, the US Embassy expressed its well wishes for the ongoing success of all Libyan soldiers.

The US also reaffirmed its “commitment to the pursuit of a safe and sovereign Libya, underpinned by a cohesive national military force.”

9 August 2023, marked the 83rd anniversary of the founding of the Libyan Army, which took place in Egypt, during the tumultuous period of World War II.

On Sunday, the Commander-in-Chief of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar received the Head of the Libyan Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Mnifi in Benghazi.

The meeting discussed ways to create suitable conditions for “fair Parliamentary and Presidential elections.” As well as evaluating “strategies to address national security challenges along the Libyan borders.”

Prior to the meeting, Al-Mnifi embarked on a visit to inspect several developmental projects in the city, and assess the requirements for their completion ahead of the third meeting of the Financial Arrangements and Public Expenditure Committee. This is scheduled to take place on Monday, in Benghazi.

During the meeting, the two leaders emphasized the importance of “establishing an environment conducive to holding transparent and inclusive elections, enabling the Libyan people to choose their representatives freely.”

They also expressed the need to “ensure the security and stability of the country, particularly in light of the challenges posed by border security.”

The discussions encompassed various aspects related to electoral preparations, including voter registration, the role of electoral institutions, and the implementation of electoral laws.

The two stressed the significance of international support and cooperation, in facilitating a successful electoral process.

Furthermore, they deliberated on enhancing national security measures to safeguard Libya’s borders, and combat threats posed by transnational organized crime, terrorism, and illegal migration.

Libya, a nation ravaged by years of conflict and political turmoil, remains trapped in a state of division as two rival armies vie for control. The split between the eastern-based LNA and the Tripoli-based government has deepened the country’s instability, hindering efforts to establish a unified and secure Libya.
