On Wednesday, the Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Al-Sarraj received Italian Foreign Minister Luigi Di Maio in Tripoli.

The meeting discussed recent developments in Libya, in addition to bilateral cooperation between the two countries in the areas of migration.

The meeting was also attended by the Secretary General of the Italian Foreign Ministry Elisabetta Belloni, the Italian Ambassador to Libya Giuseppe Buccino, and a number of political and security officials.

The GNA’s Foreign Minister Mohamed Siala, the Libyan Ambassador to the European Union Hafed Kaddour, and the Director of the European Department at the Foreign Ministry, Hajji Dahan, also attended on behalf of the GNA.

The two sides stressed the importance of returning to political negotiations and rejecting external intervention.

The meeting also touched upon the EU’s ‘IRINI’ operation, which aims to implement the UN arms embargo on Libya.

Al-Sarraj reiterated the need for the mission to be comprehensive and integrated by land, air and sea monitoring.

During the meeting, Al-Sarraj thanked Italy for its contribution to the demining operations in southern Tripoli.

The meeting discussed the issue of illegal migration and the development of joint coordination to address this problem, as well as efforts to confront
