A delegation from the Libyan parliamentary group of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, represented by members of the House of Representatives Sultanah Al-Mesmari and Rabia Buras, participated in the ‘Forum of Women Parliamentarians.’ The forum took place during the 149th General Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union, held in Geneva, Switzerland.
According to a statement posted on the official website of the Libyan House of Representatives, Dr. Sultanah Al-Mesmari delivered a speech discussing the advantages and disadvantages of artificial intelligence (AI). She highlighted the ethical concerns surrounding the misuse of AI technology for purposes that contradict justice and human principles. Al-Mesmari cited Israel’s use of mobile phones and surveillance cameras as tools to intensify its targeting of Palestinians, which has resulted in greater harm and widespread destruction.
The statement also stressed the need for a reassessment of international humanitarian law to include serious measures aimed at limiting the risks posed by the use of AI in acts that could lead to the extermination of populations.
Libya has been in chaos since a NATO-backed uprising toppled longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011. The county has for years been split between rival administrations.
Libya’s economy, heavily reliant on oil, has suffered due to the ongoing conflict. The instability has led to fluctuations in oil production and prices, impacting the global oil market and Libya’s economy.

The planned elections for December 2021 were delayed due to disagreements over election laws and the eligibility of certain candidates. This delay has raised concerns about the feasibility of a peaceful political transition.
Despite the ceasefire, security remains a significant concern with sporadic fighting and the presence of mercenaries and foreign fighters. The unification of the military and the removal of foreign forces are crucial challenges.
