Tunisian customs officers in Ben Guerdane intercepted an attempt to smuggle more than €620,000 in undeclared foreign currency from Libya.

The money was discovered during a routine search of a foreign-registered vehicle carrying four passengers – the driver and three women – near the El-Qitoun checkpoint.

According to the Tunisian Customs’ statement, the smuggling attempt was linked to movements between Libya and Tunisia.

Officers noticed suspicious behaviour from one of the women, which led to a thorough search of the vehicle. The undeclared amount of €624,120 was found hidden on her and inside personal luggage.

Tunisian authorities highlighted that the seizure is part of ongoing efforts to curb currency smuggling from Libya, which has become a growing concern along the shared border.

They noted that such attempts aim to bypass legal financial regulations, creating challenges for both Tunisian and Libyan economies.

The seized currency will undergo verification at the Central Bank of Tunisia to assess its value in dinars. The Medenine public prosecutor has authorised the arrest and questioning of the suspects and the transfer of the case to the relevant security agencies for further investigation.
