Libya’s Minister of Transport in the Government of National Unity, Mohamed Al-Shahoubi, has engaged in talks with Morocco’s Minister of Transport and Logistics, Abdel Samad Qaiouh, about reopening direct air travel between Libya and Morocco. The discussions also included plans for Royal Air Maroc flights to resume operations at Libyan airports.
The meeting was held on the sidelines of the 29th Extraordinary Session of the General Assembly of the Arab Civil Aviation Organization in Rabat.
Libya and Morocco aim to reestablish direct air connectivity by 2025, following a nearly decade-long suspension. Both countries also expressed interest in launching a direct maritime route to link their ports and further strengthen bilateral relations.
According to a statement from Morocco’s Ministry of Transport, the discussions reflected mutual determination to enhance collaboration in the transport sector.
Al-Shahoubi emphasized Libya’s eagerness to restore air links with Morocco to boost economic exchange and foster bilateral cooperation in various sectors. He also highlighted Libya’s willingness to participate in initiatives to establish a direct maritime connection between the two countries to encourage trade and commerce.
For his part, Morocco’s Minister of Transport reiterated the country’s readiness to advance collaboration in the transport sector and explore avenues to enhance bilateral ties.
Both ministers agreed to intensify meetings of joint technical committees to discuss opportunities for cooperation and share expertise in the transport sector.
Air travel between Libya and Morocco has been suspended since February 2015 due to a decision by Moroccan authorities citing security concerns. The ban also prohibited Libyan aircraft from flying over Moroccan airspace.
