Disturbing footage has emerged from Libya, showing the brutal torture of an Ethiopian migrant, allegedly by human traffickers in the southern city of Kufra. The horrifying acts were reportedly carried out to extort a ransom from her family.

The video depicts the young woman, identified as 20-year-old Naima Jamal, tied by her hands and suspended by a rope. She is seen being mercilessly whipped after cold water was poured on her frail body. Her screams were met with indifference by her captors.

Another image shows her shackled, surrounded by dozens of other migrants held in captivity. The detainees sit on the ground in a closed space, heads lowered, awaiting their fate or turn for torture in a dehumanising scene.

According to the organisation “Refugees in Libya,” Naima was abducted shortly after arriving in Libya in May 2024. Her family has since received numerous demands from the traffickers, along with threatening calls. The captors demanded $6,000 for her release and sent a video of her being tortured to pressure her family further.

These graphic recordings have reignited concerns about the rampant human trafficking in Libya, shedding light on the grim reality faced by migrants. The videos underscore the pervasive exploitation and inhumane treatment migrants endure at the hands of traffickers who prey on their desperation.

While Libyan authorities claim to be cracking down on human trafficking networks, dismantling dozens of operations, and arresting those responsible, the issue remains widespread. Migrants fleeing war and poverty continue to fall victim to these ruthless smuggling gangs, highlighting the urgent need for more effective intervention.
