A group of residents from the Libyan city of Surman has called on the country’s Attorney General and the interim Government of National Unity (GNU) to take urgent action for the release of Sobhi Ajdai, a Libyan citizen imprisoned in Tunisia. The protesters warned of potential consequences if the issue remains unresolved.

In a joint statement, they described Ajdai’s imprisonment as “unjust and arbitrary”, noting that he was sentenced to 31 years over an alleged attempt to smuggle a vehicle into Algeria.

According to the statement, multiple attempts were made to secure a fair trial by hiring legal representation, but despite their efforts, the appeals process led to a reduced but still severe 11-year sentence.

The families emphasized that all relevant legal documents are available for review and urged authorities to coordinate with the Libyan Consulate in Sfax and the embassy’s legal representatives in Tunisia to revisit the case.

They called for immediate intervention to protect the dignity of Libyan citizens and push for a reconsideration of the verdict.

“We hope authorities act swiftly to prevent any undesirable consequences that could strain relations between neighboring countries,” the statement concluded.
