The Government of National Unity (GNU) and the United Nations have held high-level talks aimed at reinforcing joint efforts in humanitarian and development sectors across Libya.

The coordination meeting was hosted at the headquarters of Libya’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, chaired by Acting Foreign Minister Al-Taher Al-Baour, and attended by senior ministry officials. The United Nations delegation was led by Stephanie Khoury, Deputy Head of the UN Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), and the Deputy Special Representative for Humanitarian Affairs, along with heads of UN-affiliated international organisations operating in the country.

The meeting focused on enhancing cooperation between Libya and the United Nations, with both sides discussing mechanisms to support Libyan-led humanitarian and development initiatives. They also explored ways to improve the coordination and efficiency of joint programmes to ensure impactful service delivery to Libyan citizens.

Al-Taher Al-Baour underscored the critical role of the United Nations and its agencies in advancing stability and development in Libya. He emphasised the need for intensified efforts to achieve shared goals, particularly in providing humanitarian aid and supporting reconstruction plans.

UN representatives, for their part, expressed appreciation for the ongoing partnership with the Libyan government, reaffirming their commitment to supporting national efforts aimed at promoting security and sustainable development throughout the country.

The session also featured a review of the key challenges facing humanitarian and development operations in Libya, and discussions on strengthening coordination with international organisations to build a strategic partnership aligned with Libya’s national interests.
