Libya has renewed its call for the recovery and release of its frozen funds abroad, urging the international community to allow the use of these assets for national reconstruction and development.

In a statement before the Second Committee of the UN General Assembly, Intisar Al-Tamzini, Minister Plenipotentiary at Libya’s Permanent Mission to the United Nations, described the recovery of Libya’s stolen and frozen assets as both a matter of justice and a right belonging to the Libyan people.

Al-Tamzini emphasised that these funds are crucial for supporting basic services, rebuilding infrastructure, and financing national development projects. She called on the international community to take serious and coordinated steps to ensure the return of Libya’s assets and to enable their use in advancing stability and economic growth.

The Libyan representative also addressed the growing challenges linked to irregular migration, highlighting the heavy burden Libya bears as a transit country. She explained that the influx of migrants places increasing pressure on the country’s limited resources and hinders its development efforts.

Al-Tamzini urged developed nations to share responsibility and strengthen international partnerships in tackling the root causes of irregular migration. She also called for enhanced cooperation to ensure that Libya’s efforts to manage migration are supported in a manner consistent with human rights principles and national sovereignty.

Libya’s intervention at the UN reflects its broader diplomatic push to reclaim frozen assets held abroad since 2011, which authorities say are vital for rebuilding the economy and improving living conditions.
