The United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, has called on all Libyan leaders and institutions to engage constructively and in good faith with the UN mission in Libya, calling for a renewed commitment to the national interest and unity above all political divisions.

In a televised interview, Guterres said that Libya is at a decisive moment that demands responsibility, compromise, and cooperation from all sides. He emphasized that the UN’s roadmap offers a realistic pathway toward stability, national unity, and legitimate governance through elections and an inclusive political dialogue.

The Secretary-General referred to the roadmap presented in August by his Special Representative for Libya, Hana Tetteh, which outlines steps to restore confidence in Libya’s political process. The plan focuses on holding credible national elections, forming a unified government, and creating accountable state institutions capable of serving all Libyans equally.

Guterres stressed that for the roadmap to succeed, international consensus and Security Council unity are essential. He noted that coordinated international support remains the key to breaking Libya’s prolonged political stalemate and ensuring progress toward peace and institutional legitimacy.

The Secretary-General reaffirmed the United Nations’ commitment to helping Libya overcome years of division and instability. He called on all Libyan political and military leaders to put aside narrow interests and focus on building a stable, democratic state that reflects the will of the people.
