The European Union’s Ambassador to Libya, Nicola Orlando, has expressed deep sorrow over reports of another tragic shipwreck off the Libyan coast, highlighting the growing human cost of migrant smuggling and trafficking networks operating across the Mediterranean.

In a statement shared on social media, Orlando said the incident was a painful reminder of “the unbearable human toll of migrant smuggling and trafficking,” stressing that such tragedies underscore the urgent need for coordinated international efforts to prevent further loss of life.

He reaffirmed the EU’s continued commitment to tackling the root causes of irregular migration by investing in development and stabilisation programmes in migrants’ countries of origin, in partnership with the United Nations and other international organisations. These efforts, he said, are essential to addressing poverty, instability, and conflict that drive people to undertake perilous journeys toward Europe.

The ambassador also reiterated the European Union’s support for Libya’s institutions, emphasising cooperation with authorities across the country to strengthen land border management, promote voluntary returns of migrants to their home countries, and combat human rights violations linked to trafficking and detention practices.

Orlando noted that fighting the international criminal networks exploiting vulnerable migrants remains a top EU priority. He called for continued collaboration between Libya, European partners, and international organisations to dismantle the smuggling routes that continue to claim hundreds of lives each year.

The Mediterranean remains one of the world’s deadliest migration routes, with Libya serving as a main departure point for thousands of people seeking to cross to Europe. The latest tragedy underscores the persistent challenges facing Libya and its partners in balancing border security with the protection of human life.
