Libya’s General Command has announced the addition of four fast search-and-rescue vessels to the Libyan Navy at the Benghazi Naval Base, amid ongoing efforts aimed at strengthening maritime readiness, modernizing naval capabilities, and expanding operational roles in Libya’s territorial waters.
The announcement was made during an inspection visit by Khaled Khalifa Haftar, Chief of the General Staff of the Libyan National Army, who toured the Benghazi Naval Base to review facilities and assess the performance of naval units.
According to a statement issued by the General Staff, the four vessels were officially commissioned after the Libyan flag was raised, signaling their full integration into active service.
The newly inducted boats, named Al-Rajma, Benina, Kersa, and Al-Agila, are designed for rapid response search-and-rescue missions. Naval officials said the vessels are equipped to operate in emergency situations at sea, assist distressed vessels, support humanitarian missions, and enhance maritime safety along Libya’s coastline. Their speed and maneuverability are expected to improve response times during maritime incidents.
During the visit, Khaled Haftar met with senior naval leadership and held discussions with base commanders and officers. The meetings focused on operational readiness, current deployments, and future tasks assigned to the naval forces. Officers briefed the Chief of Staff on logistical needs, training requirements, and coordination mechanisms with other security branches.
Khaled Haftar praised the efforts of naval personnel and highlighted their role since the launch of Operation Dignity. He stressed that continued investment in training, equipment, and infrastructure remains a priority to ensure the navy can effectively meet both current and future challenges at sea.
