Libyan authorities in Benghazi have detained 132 undocumented migrants during a wide-ranging security operation aimed at curbing illegal migration and enforcing residency and movement regulations.

The operation was carried out on Thursday by the Benghazi branch of the Illegal Migration Control Agency, in coordination with the Internal Security Agency, as part of ongoing efforts to address violations linked to the unlawful presence of foreign nationals.

According to an official statement released by the agency, the operation also resulted in the seizure of 17 vehicles that were being driven by foreign nationals without valid legal documentation or the required permits. Officials said the vehicles were impounded as part of investigations into potential violations related to illegal transport and unauthorized activity.

The security campaign focused on several areas within the city, including locations surrounding Al-Hawari General Hospital. Authorities reported that groups of single male migrants from African countries had been residing in informal accommodations near the hospital, creating public disturbances and negatively affecting the surrounding environment. Officials cited repeated complaints from citizens and hospital visitors regarding congestion, noise, and the impact on the general appearance of the area.

The agency stated that clearing these locations was necessary to maintain public order, protect sensitive public facilities, and address safety and health concerns. It emphasized that such actions are conducted within the framework of Libyan law and are part of daily security operations aimed at limiting the spread of irregular migration inside urban centers.

All migrants detained during the operation were transferred to designated centers, where their legal status will be reviewed and appropriate procedures carried out in accordance with national regulations. The agency stressed that detainees are processed through established legal channels while coordination continues with relevant authorities.

Libya remains one of the main transit countries for migrants attempting to reach Europe, placing sustained pressure on local institutions, particularly in major cities such as Benghazi. Libyan officials reiterated that security campaigns will continue regularly to combat illegal migration, regulate the presence of foreign nationals, and reinforce public safety.
