Authorities in Benghazi have launched a security campaign to confiscate toy pellet guns and fireworks following growing complaints from residents about their misuse and the risks they pose to public safety.
The campaign was announced by the Benghazi Security Directorate, which said security teams had begun field operations to seize rubber pellet guns and fireworks circulating in local markets and neighbourhoods.
Officials stated that the initiative aims to enforce regulations that prohibit the sale and use of such items due to the dangers they can pose, particularly to children. The campaign also targets commercial shops that sell toy pellet guns and fireworks in violation of existing instructions.
Authorities warned that legal action will be taken against any shop owners or individuals found selling or distributing the prohibited items. Inspections are being carried out across several areas of the city to identify businesses involved in the trade of these products.
The security directorate called on residents and shop owners to comply with the instructions and cooperate with law enforcement to ensure public safety and maintain stability across the city.
Concerns over the dangers of pellet guns have increased in Libya in recent years, particularly during holiday periods when the toys become widely available in markets.
Medical experts have repeatedly warned about the serious risks these toys pose to children’s eyesight. In April 2025, doctors at Sabha Medical Center reported 63 cases of eye injuries among children on the first day of Eid al-Fitr celebrations.
According to ophthalmologists at the centre, most of the injuries were caused by direct hits from plastic pellets fired by toy guns. While many of the cases involved mild to moderate eye trauma, two children required urgent surgical intervention due to the severity of their injuries.
Health professionals have urged parents to avoid purchasing hazardous toys and to remain vigilant during festive seasons when such items are commonly used.
Authorities say the Benghazi campaign is part of wider efforts to raise public awareness, regulate markets and protect children from preventable injuries.
