Tobruk Shipwreck: 10 Dead & Several Missing After Boat Capsizes

The Libyan Red Crescent confirmed on Monday that emergency recovery teams have pulled four additional bodies from the water following a tragic boat capsizing off the shores of Tobruk.

This latest discovery follows a series of urgent reports filed by the Balkhather and Al-Qardaba police stations, which identified the remains as victims of the ill-fated vessel.

Specialized recovery units from the Red Crescent’s Tobruk branch worked in coordination with the General Administration of Coastal Security to conduct the operation. Despite the increasingly difficult maritime conditions and the physical toll of the mission, the teams successfully transported the deceased to the Tobruk Medical Center morgue for formal identification and processing.

The emergency began unfolding on Sunday when a distress call regarding a rubber boat in open water reached the Al-Jihad center and the national coast guard. Responders were immediately met with treacherous weather as waves surged to heights of over two meters, making any rescue attempt exceptionally dangerous.

These grueling conditions dictated the pace of the mission, which has now stretched into its second full day of active searching. While the combined efforts of the maritime authorities and volunteer teams resulted in the rescue of four survivors on Sunday the rising number of recovered bodies highlights the devastating scale of the incident.

As it stands, the total number of confirmed fatalities from the shipwreck has reached ten after the six victims found during the initial phase of the search. Local authorities have emphasized that the mission remains active as several individuals are still reported missing at sea.
