A recent survey conducted by the United Nations Support Mission in Libya has revealed overwhelming public demand for elections in Libya, with nearly 90% of respondents calling for a vote to be held as soon as possible.
Strong Public Demand for Elections
The “Have Your Say” poll, carried out between February and March and involving around 6,000 participants across Libya, highlights growing frustration with the country’s prolonged political stalemate. According to the findings, nine out of ten respondents stressed the urgent need to organise national elections.
Political Division Impacts Daily Life
More than 90% of those surveyed said the ongoing political division is negatively affecting their daily lives, underlining the human and economic toll of Libya’s institutional split. The results reflect widespread public concern over instability and the lack of unified governance.
Conditional Support for Security Role
The survey also found that over 60% of participants support involving security forces and some armed groups in securing the electoral process. However, this backing is conditional on clear guarantees, including non-interference in the voting process, respect for election results, and full protection for voters and candidates.
Push for Stability and Legitimacy
The findings reinforce calls for a credible electoral roadmap as a pathway toward restoring political legitimacy and stability in Libya. The UN mission has consistently emphasised the importance of inclusive, transparent elections as a cornerstone for ending the country’s years-long crisis.
