Libya has announced the launch of a major reconstruction project targeting the historic districts of Downtown and Sabri in Benghazi, marking a significant step toward restoring key urban areas with deep social and cultural value.
The initiative was unveiled by Belgasem Haftar, head of the Development and Reconstruction Fund, who described the project as a turning point in efforts to revive neighborhoods that hold strong historical and emotional significance for residents.
He emphasized that these areas are not just residential zones but represent an important part of the city’s identity and collective memory. As such, the reconstruction process aims to preserve their architectural heritage while introducing modern infrastructure and improved living conditions.
According to officials, the project will be implemented through a structured and transparent approach, beginning with a comprehensive assessment of damages. This will be followed by the approval of compensation plans and the start of reconstruction work, ensuring that all affected residents receive fair and clearly defined support.
Residents impacted by past damage will be given the option to either receive financial compensation or have their homes rebuilt. Authorities stressed that the process will be carried out in an organized manner that respects citizens’ rights and ensures equitable treatment.
The fund also pledged to provide regular public updates on the project’s progress, reinforcing transparency and encouraging community engagement throughout the rebuilding process. Coordination with local and international experts is expected to help deliver a model of urban development that balances heritage preservation with modernization.
Officials confirmed that funding for the project has already been secured within the national budget, allowing work to move forward without delay. The reconstruction is expected to restore life to these districts, improve living standards, and contribute to broader economic recovery in the city.
