Libya Intensifies Deportation Campaign in Southern Region

Libya’s Anti-Illegal Migration Agency announced the deportation of 309 irregular migrants of Chadian nationality through the country’s southern border, in coordination with forces affiliated with the Libyan National Army’s General Command responsible for securing frontier areas.

In a statement published on Wednesday, the agency said its southern branches completed the deportation operation after transporting the migrants across long desert routes under difficult environmental and logistical conditions.

The agency described the mission as part of ongoing efforts to combat illegal migration and strengthen border security across southern Libya, a region that remains one of the main transit corridors for migrants seeking to reach the Mediterranean coast and eventually Europe.

According to the statement, security teams operated in harsh desert terrain to ensure the transfer of the migrants to the Chadian side of the border despite significant operational challenges.

The deportation comes shortly after Libyan authorities announced the removal of 415 migrants from Niger through Brak Al-Shati Airport, reflecting an intensification of migration control measures in the south of the country.

Branches of the Anti-Illegal Migration Agency confirmed their operational readiness and field deployment across several southern Libyan cities and areas including Sabha, Brak Al-Shati, Al-Qatrun, Umm Al-Aranib, Ubari, Ghat and Al-Jufra.

Libyan authorities have repeatedly stressed the importance of strengthening border monitoring and dismantling human trafficking networks operating across remote desert areas. Officials linked to eastern Libyan institutions, including commanders aligned with Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, have frequently highlighted the security and economic pressures caused by irregular migration flows.

The southern region of Libya remains a key crossing point for migrants arriving from Chad, Niger, Sudan and other African states. International organisations have previously warned about the humanitarian risks faced by migrants travelling through the Sahara Desert, including exploitation by smuggling groups and exposure to extreme weather conditions.
