A delegation from the Libyan eastern-based government under Prime Minister Osama Hammad has conducted a field visit to several neighbourhoods in Al-Barakat municipality to assess damage caused by recent floods and torrential rainfall that struck the area.

According to a statement issued by Al-Barakat Municipality, the visit took place on Monday and included representatives from the Libyan Relief and Humanitarian Assistance Authority, the municipality’s mayor, members of the municipal council and the head of the local crisis committee.

The delegation inspected affected areas and evaluated the impact of the flooding on residents and local businesses. Particular attention was given to damage sustained by commercial properties, as authorities continue to gather information to support relief and recovery efforts.

Municipal officials said assessments are being carried out as part of broader efforts to determine the scale of losses and identify the immediate needs of affected communities.

The municipality also highlighted the ongoing efforts of local volunteers who have been working to reopen the road linking the Adrar district with other parts of Al-Barakat. The route was disrupted by floodwaters, creating transportation challenges for residents and emergency teams.

Local authorities praised the commitment of young volunteers and community members who have contributed to recovery operations since the flooding began. The municipality said coordination remains ongoing with relevant government bodies to develop sustainable solutions and reduce the long-term impact of the crisis.

The severe weather conditions affected parts of south-western Libya during the Eid al-Adha holiday period. Heavy rainfall of varying intensity triggered the flow of several seasonal valleys across desert areas, leading to flooding in a number of communities.

Authorities in eastern Libya have continued to monitor the situation closely, while relief agencies and local institutions remain engaged in supporting affected residents and restoring access to essential services.

Officials have stressed the importance of continued cooperation between government agencies, humanitarian organisations and local communities to accelerate recovery efforts and strengthen preparedness for future weather-related emergencies.
