Salima Salem Al-Mukhtar, granddaughter of Libya’s national resistance hero Omar Al-Mukhtar, has died in the eastern city of Benghazi.

Al-Mukhtar was the daughter of Fatima Omar Al-Mukhtar, one of the daughters of the revered Libyan leader who became a lasting symbol of resistance against Italian colonial rule.

Her death marks the passing of a member of one of Libya’s most historically respected families. Omar Al-Mukhtar, widely known as the Lion of the Desert, remains one of the most prominent figures in Libya’s modern history and a symbol of courage, dignity, and national struggle.

Many Libyans continue to view the Al-Mukhtar family as closely connected to the country’s identity, memory, and fight for independence.
