Libya is set to witness a historic milestone in its sporting landscape as Intisar Shneib becomes the first woman to lead a sports club in the country.
She is expected to assume the presidency of Darnes Sports Club after all rival candidates withdrew from the race and endorsed her candidacy.
The unprecedented move marks a significant moment for women’s leadership in Libya and reflects changing attitudes toward female participation in positions traditionally dominated by men.
Shneib, a member of Libya’s House of Representatives and a native of Derna, described the appointment as both a great honor and a major responsibility.
According to club officials, competing candidates stepped aside in recognition of Shneib’s ability to support the club’s future development through her professional experience, public standing, and strong network of relationships.
The decision paved the way for her appointment by consensus, making her the sole candidate for the position.
Founded in 1958 in the city of Derna, Darnes Sports Club is one of eastern Libya’s most respected sporting institutions.
The club has long played an important role in the city’s social, cultural, and athletic life and enjoys a loyal following across the region.
Shneib said her vision extends beyond football and sporting achievements. She aims to strengthen the club’s social and cultural role, expand community activities, and create greater opportunities for women and young people to participate in club programs.
She also stressed the importance of developing youth talent and improving the club’s financial sustainability through investment and long-term planning.
Her appointment comes at a challenging time for the club and the city.
Derna continues to recover from years of conflict, economic difficulties, and the devastating impact of Storm Daniel, which caused widespread destruction and significant loss of life in 2023.
