The Brega Petroleum Marketing Company has dismissed reports of a fuel shortage in eastern Libya, saying petrol supplies remain stable and distribution operations are continuing as planned despite temporary congestion at some filling stations in Benghazi.
In a statement, the state-owned company said fuel reserves at the Ras al-Mangar depot in Benghazi and the Tobruk oil terminal remain at reassuring levels, with sufficient stocks available to meet demand across eastern Libya.
According to the company, the Ras al-Mangar depot currently holds around 19 million litres of petrol, compared with an average daily withdrawal of approximately 4.3 million litres. It added that supplies are expected to increase further within hours with the arrival of a fuel tanker carrying more than 31.3 million litres of petrol.
Brega said the queues seen at several filling stations in Benghazi were caused by operational issues affecting some distribution companies rather than a shortage of fuel. It explained that recent electricity outages disrupted fuel pumping operations at a number of stations, temporarily slowing service and creating congestion.
The company stressed that the situation does not reflect a decline in fuel stocks or any interruption to national supply chains.
Brega urged fuel distribution companies to equip their filling stations with suitably powered generators to ensure uninterrupted operations during electricity cuts, saying such measures would help reduce waiting times and improve service for motorists.
The company also acknowledged temporary disruptions to fuel deliveries in areas west of Derna after several fuel tankers operated by distribution companies were taken out of service. In response, it said emergency tankers had been dispatched from the Ras al-Mangar depot to supply communities stretching from Al-Abyar to Derna, including Al-Qubbah and Al-Aziziat.
Meanwhile, the Tobruk depot continues to supply the city of Tobruk with fuel without interruption, Brega said, adding that distribution across eastern Libya remains under close monitoring to ensure stable supplies and respond quickly to any operational challenges.
