Mayors Call for Parliamentary Elections in February 2021

The mayors of 29 municipalities throughout Libya have called for the upcoming parliamentary elections to be held sooner and no later than February 2021. This is based on the constitutional declaration, and the previous election law.

They demanded the Government of National Accord’s (GNA) Presidential Council to provide the required material support in order to hold the elections at this specific time. They added that the UN mission is fully responsible for these elections, as it must ensure international monitoring for the success of free, and fair voting.

The mayors affirmed that the next elected parliament would exercise its duties for two years. This period cannot be extended under any pretext. Its primary goal is to reach an agreement on the country’s future constitution. The mayors also called for an executive government that would be appointed on the basis of competence, away from quotas, regionalisation, and assigning sovereign positions.

They pointed out their lack of confidence in the success of the political dialogue process, stating that the dialogue process was far from the aspirations of the Libyan people.
