EU Claims IRINI Deals Firmly with Arms Embargo’s Violations

The head of the European Union Military Committee (EUMC), Mikhail Kostarakos said that the IRINI Operation was firmly dealing with all violations of the UN arms embargo on Libya.

In a press statement, Kostarakos said that the mission’s goal is to prevent the smuggling of weapons into Libya. He added that EU countries support Greece in its conflict with Turkey, in the eastern Mediterranean. He also noted that the threat level in the region was rising.

IRINI was launched on 31 March 2020, with the aim to enforce the UN arms embargo on Libya. It is a European Union military operation, under the umbrella of the Common Security and Defence Policy (CSDP). The arms embargo is consistently violated and was called “a joke” by the acting UN deputy special envoy for Libya, Stephanie Williams.
