On Wednesday, Secretary-General of the Arab League (AL), Ahmed Aboul Gheit held a telephone conversation with the Head of Libya’s newly-elected Presidency Council, Mohamed Al-Menfi to discuss the latest political developments in the country.

During the talks, Aboul Gheit voiced the League’s full support for the new executive authority that would lead Libya to elections later this year. He also congratulated Al-Menfi on his election by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF) and wished him success in his new post.

The AL chief reiterated his support for a political solution, and the formation of a new government that meets the aspirations of the Libyan people. He also expressed his hope that this would pave the way for national reconciliation and end divisions.

Earlier this month, Libya’s rival political groups agreed in Geneva talks to form an interim unity government that will lead the country until elections are held on 24 December 2021.

The new unified executive authority was elected after a run-off vote by the LPDF in Geneva. Mohamed Al-Menfi was elected President, Musa Al-Koni, and Abdulla Al-Lafi as his deputies, and Abdel-Hamid Dabiba as Prime Minister.

Libyan envoys at UN-backed talks in Hurghada also agreed to hold a constitutional referendum, before the December elections.
