Italian & Maltese Interior Ministers Discuss Political Developments in Libya

Italian Interior Minister, Luciana Lamorgese received her Maltese counterpart, Byron Camilleri at the headquarters of the Italian Interior Ministry.

During the meeting, the two discussed bilateral issues related to managing migration flows, with particular attention to recent political developments regarding the formation of the new Government of National Unity (GNU) in Libya.

They discussed the progress of negotiations on the new EU charter for asylum and immigration. This is in light of the meeting that will be held in Athens next week, between officials of the Ministry of the Interior in Italy, Malta, Greece, Cyprus, and Spain.

On Wednesday, Libyan lawmakers granted confidence to the GNU, to help unify the divided country, and shepherd it through to elections in December 2021.

The 132 lawmakers approved the government of Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, which replaces two rival administrations — one based in the country’s east and another in the west — that have been ruling Libya since 2014.
