Baio: Libya’s December Elections Responsibility of Parliament

Head of the Libyan Media Corporation (LMC), Mohamed Baio said that the general elections planned for 24 December are not the government’s responsibility alone, but first the responsibility of the Libyan Parliament.

Baio added that the Parliament must announce the roadmap, define the constitutional basis, and issue the election laws.

On Wednesday, Libyan lawmakers granted confidence to the GNU, to help unify the divided country, and shepherd it through to elections in December 2021.

The 132 lawmakers approved the government of Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba, which replaces two rival administrations — one based in the country’s east and another in the west — that have been ruling Libya since 2014.

“There is no centralization of the state, no centralization of the regions, and the power of the state will be through effective local governance,” Dbaiba said. He stressed that “ war cannot be repeated, and we cannot return to killing one another again.”

The PM pledged to the MPs, “I will work hard to support the Presidential Council, the electoral commission, and ensure there is no centralization of the state.”
