France Urges Security Council to Monitor Ceasefire in Libya

France’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, Nicolas de Rivière called on the UN Security Council to adopt a resolution “as soon as possible” regarding establishing a mechanism to monitor compliance with the ceasefire in Libya.

In his speech to the Security Council, he said: “The council must respond to the demands of the Libyan people, and adopt without further delay a resolution authorising the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to deploy an effective and reliable mechanism to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement.”

On Tuesday, French President Emmanuel Macron called for the withdrawal of foreign forces and mercenaries from Libya. He stressed his support for the Government of National Unity (GNU) during the current transitional phase.

In a press briefing to journalists, Macron said that the Libyan people have the right to restore their full sovereignty, as well as benefit from the natural wealth of their country.”On Monday our embassy in Tripoli will reopen, and our ambassador will be back on your territory,” he noted.

Paris closed its embassy after evacuating some 50 French and British nationals when fighting broke out in Tripoli in July 2014. It has since based its ambassador in neighbouring Tunisia.
