On Thursday, the Libyan Presidential Council appointed Major General Hussein Mohammed Al-A’eb to serve as the Head of the country’s intelligence service.

According to the Presidential Council’s decision No. 17 of 2021, the appointment of Al-A’eb replaces Mustafa Al-Muqrin, who was appointed by the Libyan Parliament, and Emad Trabelsi who was appointed by the previous Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA), Fayez Al-Sarraj.

On 16 March, power was handed over from the previous GNA to the Government of National Unity (GNU) led by Prime Minister Abdel-Hamid Dbaiba. The new interim government is set to pave the way for elections in December 2021.

The Head of the Presidential Council is Mohamed Al-Mnifi, alongside his two deputies, Mousa Al-Koni, and Abdullah Al-Lafi.
