On Tuesday, Minister of State for Immigration Affairs, Ajdid Maatog inspected the Al-Tom border crossing with Niger, as part of his tour of southern Libya.

The minister’s border visit is aimed at “finding out the needs of the Libyan security services deployed at the Libyan-Nigerian borders.”

Maatog started his tour in the southern region on Sunday, when he visited the city of Sebha. He met with security and military leaders, and local officials there to discuss ways to resolve the illegal immigration crisis. On Monday, he visited Al-Qatrun, where he held an expanded meeting with the military and security leaders in the municipality, in the presence of the Libyan Parliament’s rapporteur, Saleh Qalma.

Earlier this month, Libyan Foreign Minister, Najla Al-Mangoush said during a tour of the borders with Niger that Libya wishes stability for Chad, “according to what its people decide, what achieves their aspirations, and by peaceful means.”

“In Libya, we have suffered greatly from armed groups crossing our borders and being taking part in the conflict. We have repeatedly called on our neighbouring countries to help us reach solutions that protect us and protect them from war,” she added.

She affirmed that the Libyans “will not act as borders guards for Europe,” adding that, “Libya will not be a transit point for the suffering and persecution against our African brothers,” she noted.
