On Saturday, the Speaker of the Libyan House of Representatives (HoR), Ageela Saleh, issued a decision to form a parliamentary committee tasked with drafting parliamentary legislations necessary for the December 24th elections. This would occur in cooperation with the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) and the High National Elections Commission (HNEC), and be presented to Members of Parliament (MPs) for approval.

The committee includes Ezz El-Din Qwerb, Al-Hadi Ali Al-Saghir, Ramadan Shambash, Abdel Salam Al-Murabit, Mohamed Ibrahim Tamer, Ezz El-Din Mesbah Borawi, Miftah Akweder, and Salah Balhouk.

Saleh confirmed that parliament has begun preparing a law for direct presidential elections. They also discussed the distribution of electoral districts across the country to meet the electoral entitlement on time.

He also stressed that parliament fulfilled its pledges, calling on all parties to work to fulfill theirs, including the appointment of leadership positions to sovereign state positions. They also stressed the necessity of holding the elections on the 24th of December 2021. However, no consensus on the constitutional basis to hold the upcoming elections has been reached.

UNSMIL said that the Libyan people will certainly feel let down, as they still aspire to exercise their democratic rights in the December elections.
