Former Libyan Representative to the UN: Kubiš Destroyed Dream of Elections in December

Ibrahim Dabbashi, the former Libyan delegate to the United Nations (UN) and the Security Council, described Ján Kubiš, Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL), as the worst ever Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the UN.

“Ján Kubiš has proven that he is the worst ever Special Representative of the Secretary-General of the United Nations in Libya,” Dabbashi said in a tweet on Saturday.

He added that the Head of UNSMIL destroyed the dream of Libyans to hold the country’s upcoming elections, scheduled for December 24th. He said that Kubiš’ predecessor, Stephanie Williams had accomplished this during the last months.

He explained, that “by reopening the road map adopted by the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), Kubiš destroyed the accomplishment of his predecessor and the dream of Libyans to have elections on the 24th of December.”

Kubiš’ appointment as the Head of UNSMIL on January 2020 followed a lengthy search, where multiple countries and regional blocs prevented prior potential appointments. His predecessor, Ghassan Salame resigned in March 2020, leaving Williams as Acting Head of UNSMIL for the past ten months.

An attempt to appoint the former Bulgarian Foreign Minister Nickolay Mladenov failed when Mladenov withdrew in December last year after many procedural issues were used to delay the finalization of his appointment.
