France Says Unilateral Action Won’t Solve Libyan Crisis

On Tuesday, France’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated that the Libyan conflict could not be solved through unilateral decisions, but only under the auspices of UN-mediated political dialogue.

“The solution to the Libyan conflict can only take place through dialogue between the parties, under the aegis of the United Nations, not through unilateral decisions,” Foreign Ministry Deputy Spokesman Olivier Gauvin said in a statement.

“There is no alternative to an inclusive political solution, as part of the conclusions of the Berlin conference,” Gauvin said, adding that Paris was hoping to help Libya achieve unity and stability.

On Monday, the General Commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA), Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar, announced that the LNA would take over the management of Libya’s affairs of state. According to Haftar, the UN-brokered Libyan Political Agreement that was signed in Skirhat, Morocco, in 2015 has expired and can no longer be considered valid.

The LNA commander thanked the Libyan people for supporting the country’s armed forces and vowed to continue the LNA’s battle against extremism in Libya.
