Libyan Member of Parliament, Abdel-Moneim Al-Arfi said that “the initiative of the Head of the Presidential Council, Mohamed Al-Mnifi was planned and caused an attack on the Parliament’s headquarters in Tobruk.”

He added that Al-Mnifi “is not entitled to initiate initiatives, or to set a constitutional basis for elections.”

Al-Arfi indicated that “if an agreement is reached between the actors on the ground, and the government appointed by the Parliament is allowed to carry out its duties, this is the only way to move towards Parliamentary and Presidential elections early next year.”

He confirmed that a Parliamentary session will be held in Tobruk after Eid Al-Adha. This is when the law of unifying salaries will be approved, and the owners of investment portfolios will be considered.”

Commenting on the demands of the demonstrators, Al-Arfi said that “the demands of the popular protests are legitimate, but they are not against the Parliament, but against the government, and the defects in it. As it has not provided services, and has many corrupt officials.”

Regarding the protests calling for the departure of all political bodies, Al-Arfi affirmed that “there are laws for elections that must move forward in their implementation.” He added that they “were issued by the legislative authority, even if they are seen as flawed by some. Elections can be accomplished with these laws for new legislative and executive bodies.”
