Tunisian Parties Warn of Tunisia’s Involvement in Libyan Conflict

Differences have been revived between Tunisia’s Ennahda movement and several opposition parties over Turkey’s role in supporting one of the parties to the conflict in Libya using Tunisian territory.

The dispute came following a Turkish plane landed at Djerba-Zarzis International Airport on Friday, sparking controversy over Turkish influence in the region.

Six Tunisian parties said in a joint statement on Saturday that they warn of the continuing ambiguity adopted by the Tunisian authorities in everything related to Turkish activities in the region.

The parties affirmed their absolute rejection of any Turkish activity on Tunisian soil, calling upon Tunisian President Kais Saied to announce “a clear position on Turkey’s attempts to have a military presence, either directly or indirectly, because it poses a great threat to regional peace and security.”

The Tunisian presidency said that it allowed the plane to land at the Djerba airport and that the plane was “conditioned to deliver assistance intended for the brethren in Libya” and that Tunisian authorities were to “take the cargo to the border crossing of Ras Jedir to deliver it to the Libyan side.”

Party leaders have expressed concern over attempts by some organisations to turn Tunisia into a logistics hub for foreign interference in Libyan affairs.
