German naval vessels will join the EU’s Operation “IRINI” in the Mediterranean Sea to monitor the UN arms embargo on Libya by August, according to German Minister of State Niels Annen.

In an interview with The National, Annen confirmed his country’s commitment to the EU’s mission, stressing the importance of Operation ‘IRINI’ to enforce the outcomes of the Berlin Conference that was held in January 2020.

“Germany is already contributing with a maritime patrol aircraft as well as positions in the headquarters of the operation,” he stated.

“We are planning to contribute naval assets by August 2020. This underlines our government’s high political support for ‘IRINI’ and the Libyan peace process.” Annen added.
