Maltese Prime Minister, Robert Abela, concluded his official visit to Libya on Thursday, during which he met with Prime Minister of the Government of National Accord (GNA) Fayez Al-Sarraj. The two discussed recent developments in Libya and a number of joint cooperation ventures.

In a statement published on Thursday, the GNA’s Presidential Council said that both parties signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to combat illegal immigration and strengthen bilateral relations.

During the talks, Al-Sarraj stressed the close relationship between the neighboring countries, expressing his appreciation for Malta’s support to the GNA and his aspiration to further relations.
Abela reiterated his support for the GNA, stressing that there was no military solution to the crisis and only a political solution would achieve peace.

The two leaders also discussed the European Union’s Operation ‘IRINI’, which is meant to implement the UN arms embargo on Libya.

They both agreed that the operation should take into account the reservations expressed by the GNA and Malta.

The two premiers also discussed coordination efforts in facing the global COVID-19 pandemic and dealing with its repercussions.
