Dutch Ambassador to Libya Lars Tummers has expressed his sadness over reports about the discovery of at least eight mass graves in the city of Tarhuna.

On his Twitter account, Tummers said that “the images and reports of mass graves around Tarhuna are shocking and intolerable. We grieve along with the families of the victims. We support the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to conduct an impartial investigation”.

“We urge all parties to ensure the protection of human rights and accountability throughout Libya,” Tummers added.

The UN mission in Libya said in a statement that it was horrified by reports surrounding the discovery of the mass graves. “International law requires that the authorities conduct prompt, effective and transparent investigations into all alleged cases of unlawful deaths”.
