On Monday, Josep Borrell, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, called on Turkey to “de-escalate the current situation in Libya and return to the option of real partnership” with the EU.

These remarks came during a meeting between European Union foreign ministers and U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.

He added that the foreign ministers expressed their concern over the escalation of tension in the eastern Mediterranean.

“Greece and Cyprus have been rightly complaining about the fact that there are drillings very near their coastline,” he stated.

The EU official said that the next foreign affairs council will discuss the issue of the bloc’s affairs with Turkey.

Greek Foreign Minister Nikos Dendias said that the EU condemned Turkish intervention in Libya. He added that the Memorandum of Understanding invoked by Ankara to intervene in Libya was rejected.
