Egyptian Workers Abused By GNA Forces Arrive In Cairo

A number of Egyptian workers that had been kidnapped and tortured by Government for National Accord (GNA) aligned forces arrived in Cairo following their release on Thursday.

The 23 workers who had been detained in Libya arrived aboard four buses that were escorted by Libyan National Army (LNA) forces to the Salloum border crossing with Egypt. This came after Egyptian authorities intervened to ask for their release.

The spokesman of the LNA, Major General Ahmed Al-Mismari, announced that “the torture of Egyptian workers took place at the headquarters of the Al-Hazm militia, affiliated with the GNA in Misrata”.

GNA’s forces arrested dozens of Egyptian workers from the city of Tarhuna and subjected them to torture.

They were accused of supporting the Libyan National Army, which is led by Field Marshal Khalifa Haftar.

Video clips and photos circulating on social media showed scenes of torture and insult to the Egyptian workers after they were arrested by armed militias.

The Egyptian government announced on Monday that this attack on Egyptian workers “will not go unnoticed”.

In response to requests for briefing the Egyptian Parliament regarding the incident, Egyptian Minister of Immigration Nabila Makram Ebeid said that Egypt will not remain silent on any violations or attacks on its workers abroad and will take practical steps to respond.
